In a land far, far away—13.1 billion years to be exact—astronomers have discovered the most distant galaxy yet. Called by scientists "z8_GND5296," it existed when the universe was a youthful 700 million years old. Light from the distant galaxy was discovered by the Hubble Space Telescope and the Keck Observatory in Hawaii, and took 13.1 billion years to reach there. "We are learning so much about a region so far back in time it's hard to comprehend," lead researcher Steven Finkelstein announced. The galaxy is about a billion times more massive than the sun, and also existed 8 billion years before it was ever born.
