Well, now that the Sochi Olympics are over, Vladimir Putin can stop pretending to remotely care about civil rights. On Monday, seven people who were arrested during an anti-Putin protest—on the eve of the inauguration of his third presidential term in 2012—were handed sentences of up to four years in jail. While they were found guilty on Friday, the sentencing was postponed until Monday, a move many believe was made to avoid any extra global scrutiny during the Olympics. Hundreds of supporters protested the decision outside of the Moscow court, leading authorities to, of course, subsequently detain at least 100 of them.
