The American Civil Liberties Union received $24.1 million in online donations over the weekend, organization officials reported Monday. The non-profit group, which typically makes around $4 million in online donations in a normal year, links the donations directly to an outpouring of support in response to their efforts in fighting President Trump’s anti-refugee executive order. An ACLU spokesperson reported that the donations came from 356,306 people, a majority of whom had never donated to the organization before. Over the weekend, many celebrities and others took to social media to encourage followers to donate to the ACLU and other organizations, including: Rosie O'Donnell, Sia, and Judd Apatow. Additionally, after ride-sharing app Uber broke a taxi-cab strike at New York City’s JFK airport, the hashtag #DeleteUber began trending on Twitter and, in response, competitor company Lyft pledged to donate $1 million to the ACLU.
