BUH-BYE

‘The Daily Show’ host gave props to Nordstrom for inadvertently giving President Trump a taste of his own medicine.

Trevor Noah kicked off Wednesday night’s Daily Show with “big news from the world of retail fashion and somehow the presidency.” He was of course talking about Nordstrom’s decision to stop carrying Ivanka Trump brand items, citing poor sales.

“The products are ‘just not selling?’” Noah said, quoting the news reports. “Wow. You know, for someone who would have won the popular vote, it sure seems like Trump is unpopular. Obviously what happened here is millions of dead illegal immigrants aren’t buying Ivanka’s shoes.”

Days after the decision by Nordstrom, which was also prompted by the #GrabYourWallet boycott campaign, President Trump went on Twitter and attacked the company, tweeting, “My daughter Ivanka has been treated so unfairly by @Nordstrom. She is a great person—always pushing me to do the right thing! Terrible!” He then retweeted himself from the taxpayer-funded @POTUS account.

“Why do you need to be pushed to do the right thing?” Noah asked. “Why aren’t you just doing the right thing?” Later, in his daily press briefing, Sean Spicer defended Trump by saying he was just sticking up for his daughter.

Noah summed up Spicer’s argument this way: “Don’t punish Ivanka’s brand for her father’s policies, because guilt by association is wrong.” He then added, “Anyway, back to the Muslim ban.” Spicer later said that even though Ivanka Trump is no longer running her company, in order to avoid conflict-of-interest issues, because her name is still on it, Nordstrom’s decision is an “attack” on both her and the president’s policies.

“Let’s just take a second to appreciate what just happened here,” Noah said. “For months, the Trump administration has been saying Trump businesses will be completely separated from Trump’s policies. And now they are arguing that it’s impossible to separate Trump’s businesses from his policies, which is what we’ve been saying.”

“But can I just say, thank you Nordstrom,” he added. “Because of you, Donald Trump finally realized how painful it is when a family member gets banned from a place they really want to be.”
