HBO Max Hits Big Tech Snafu After Rebrand Reversal

WHAT'S IN A NAME?

The streamer seems to be having a problem changing its name on X, formerly Twitter.

Max is officially rebranding back to HBO Max.

HBO Max is officially back on Wednesday after a two-year rebranding stint as “Max,” but the streamer has already had its first big tech snafu, as its social account wrote “twitter won’t let me change my name back,” on the platform now known as X Wednesday morning. The post comes after the initial name-change was mocked mercilessly online, and then mocked again when Warner Bros. Discovery announced in May that the platform would return to its original name. The switch officially takes effect on Wednesday, but for reasons yet to be explained, changing the name back to HBO Max on X hasn’t been as simple as updating its profile. Ironically, Twitter’s name change to X was similarly scorned in 2023. In lieu of a full name change on X, the streamer opted to change its display name to “Actually HBO Max,” and updated its profile picture to the new version of its HBO Max logo, but its username remains @streamonmax for now. On YouTube and Instagram, its handles @streamonmax successfully reverted back to @HBOMax Wednesday morning. On its X account, the streamer reacted to the snafu with a shrug: “¯\_(ツ)_/¯.”
