The U.S. Department of the Treasury and Internal Revenue Service (IRS) announced Tuesday that two IRS whistleblowers, who went public with their concerns about the government’s handling of an investigation into former first son Hunter Biden, have been promoted to leadership positions within the department and will become senior advisers. Gary Shapley and Joseph Ziegler were part of an investigation into Biden’s alleged tax evasion when they alleged that the IRS “slow-walked” the case, garnering them support from conservatives in Congress and making them centerpieces in the impeachment proceedings against then-President Joe Biden. Hunter Biden was later convicted on nine counts of tax evasion—which was later wiped from his record thanks to a pardon from his father. In a press release Tuesday, the Treasury Department wrote that Shapley and Ziegler “came forward in 2022 and subsequently faced political persecution by the IRS, including several attempts to discredit their reputations and ruin their careers.”
