Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro on Wednesday said he’s attempting to get his passport back so he can accept Donald Trump’s invitation to attend his inauguration. Bolsonaro gave his passport to authorities last year as they investigate his alleged role in an attempted coup in Brazil in 2023. Bolsonaro said in a post on X that he has made a request to get it back so he can attend the “honorable and important” event on Jan. 20 in Washington, D.C. Comparisons have been drawn between the coup attempt in Brazil—in which Bolsonaro supporters attacked government buildings in Brasilia—and the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol carried out by a mob of Trump’s supporters. “Donald Trump certainly identifies himself with Jair Bolsonaro in this sense because he was a victim of it in the United States,” Eduardo, Bolsonaro’s son, said in a video, referring to his father’s and Trump’s respective denials that they were involved in insurrections.
