Donald Trump’s children were shocked to lose friends during his first administration, Lara Trump claimed. “I don’t think any of us anticipated the backlash,” she told the New York Post. “People who had been friends forever suddenly coming out and saying horrible things about my father-in-law, the family. It was very tough.” The shock response reportedly taught the Trump family who to trust. “You get a sense of who’s around you for the right reasons and who isn’t. [Now] we’re particular with the people we let come into the trust tree,” she explained. According to Lara, however, the constant criticism also led to Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner stepping back from the president-elect’s political operation. “Jared and Ivanka obviously were very, very much involved during the first term and it was really tough on them. You know, every time we saw them, that was the constant — it was tough on them. It was tough on their family,” she explained. Yet, while her in-laws have bowed out of the political sphere, Lara has been central to Trump’s return to the White House and was a public face throughout his 2024 campaign.
