Harper Lee’s lawyer, Tonja Carter, is suggesting that the To Kill a Mockingbird author may have written a third book—a typeset she found in the writer’s safety-deposit box—in her first public statement about the release of Lee’s second novel. Carter wrote an op-ed for The Wall Street Journal Monday describing how she uncovered the transcripts and defending herself against criticism. Carter has said she’s been “pilloried” for her role as the lawyer and spokeswoman for the author, with many insinuating that Go Set a Watchman, the second novel, is being released without the author’s full consent. She now says it was found under a stack of other papers. “Was it an earlier draft of Watchman, or of Mockingbird, or even, as early correspondence indicates it might be, a third book bridging the two?” she wrote. “I don’t know.”
