Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, will terminate all DEI programs—including in hiring, training and selecting suppliers. “The legal and policy landscape surrounding diversity, equity and inclusion efforts in the United States is changing,” Janelle Gale, Meta’s vice president of human resources, wrote in an internal memo obtained by Axios. “The Supreme Court of the United States has recently made decisions signaling a shift in how courts will approach DEI. The term ‘DEI’ has also become charged, in part because it is understood by some as a practice that suggests preferential treatment of some groups over others.” The company said it would cut the DEI department and end efforts to source diverse suppliers. Meta also will terminate representation goals and diverse-slate hiring, which aim to increase diversity within the company. The move comes days after CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced that the company would get rid of fact-checkers for its social platforms. Zuckerberg also installed Donald Trump ally Dana White to Meta’s board, another concession to the incoming Trump administration.
