Nancy Pelosi returned to Congress with a walker on Monday after a hip replacement surgery. The congresswoman, 84, fell down a marble staircase during a trip to Luxembourg in December and underwent emergency hip replacement surgery. During her first appearance in the House of Representatives on Friday, Pelosi ditched her signature four-inch stilettos for a pair of slip-on flats. Pelosi’s walker is a visible reminder of an aging Congress. This Congress is the third oldest since its inception, according to an analysis by NBC News. Though Pelosi relinquished her speakership to make way for a younger leader, Congress is still filled with an old guard. She recently lobbied to shut out 35-year-old Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez from serving as the ranking Democrat on the House Oversight Committee in favor of 74-year-old Gerry Connolly, who is suffering from esophageal cancer.
