They might act alongside each other amid all sorts of fatalities on Only Murders in the Building, but Amy Schumer is not letting those Meryl Streep and Martin Short romance rumors die.
Schumer told People magazine on the “SNL50″ red carpet Sunday that she had been sat next to Streep and Short at the show’s homecoming concert on Friday—during which Streep flipped off Will Ferrell (as part of a bit) to the delight of the audience.
“I think Marty might be off the market. That’s what I’m seeing,” Schumer said after seeing the two together in close proximity. She also said that whoever had taken Short “off the market” could be described as “Maybe by just like the greatest actor of our time, I don’t know.”
Schumer’s intelligence notwithstanding, Short has shut down longstanding rumors of a romantic relationship with Streep—who revealed in October 2023 that she and ex-husband Don Gummer had been “quietly separated” for six years—more than once.
That speculation began after the pair looked cozy together at the 2024 Golden Globes. Short’s rep told People then too that they are “just very good friends, nothing more.”
And when Short joined Bill Maher’s Club Random in January, he clarified that he and Streep are “not a couple,” telling Maher in the same vein that, “we are just very close friends.”
Short and Streep’s Only Murders in the Building characters are romantic partners, however, further fueling internet speculation amidst their real-life “close” friendship. Either way, Schumer concluded that her place next to the pair “was a very fun seat to be seated in.”
