Echoing the derogatory words that Donald Trump used to open his presidential campaign last June, Rep. Steve King (R-IA) told CNN's New Day on Thursday morning that he believes “there are some awfully bad people” among the so-called DREAMers, immigrants brought to this country illegally by their parents before they turned 18, who President Obama has sought to protect from deportation through executive action. But King's hard-line stance on the issue breaks from comments that President-elect Trump made to Time magazine this week. “We’re going to work something out that’s going to make people happy and proud,” Trump said of the DREAMers. “They got brought here at a very young age, they’ve worked here, they’ve gone to school here. Some were good students. Some have wonderful jobs. And they’re in Never-Never Land because they don’t know what’s going to happen.” King also suggested that the DREAMers include drug-smugglers, who are bringing an “average of about 65 pounds” of marijuana on their backs across the border on a daily basis. He disputed that the DREAMers were brought into the country "against their will" and said that even someone who arrived as an infant should be deported. More than three years ago, King infamously said of the group, “For everyone who’s a valedictorian, there’s another 100 out there that–they weigh 130 pounds and they’ve got calves the size of cantaloupes because they’re hauling 75 pounds of marijuana across the desert.”
