Trump Impressed by Old Foe Democrat in Mar-a-Lago Meeting

BEST OF ENEMIES

One would be forgiven for thinking that Donald Trump and John Fetterman hated each other, but it appears not.

Democratic Senator John Fetterman of Pennsylvania has mended his relationship with President-elect Donald Trump and then some, as the incoming White House chief sings his praises publicly.

Fetterman became the first sitting Democrat senator to meet with the president-elect since the November polls when he bent the knee at the Florida resort over the weekend, and it appears he left an impression on the man who once baselessly accused of him of doing drugs in a bizarre outburst.

France warned Donald Trump to back off from threats to the European Union’s “sovereign borders” Wednesday, a day after he declined to rule out using military force to take Greenland.
Everybody wants to be Trump's friend, it seems

“It was a totally fascinating meeting. He’s a fascinating man, and his wife is lovely. They were both up, and I couldn’t be more impressed,” Trump told the Washington Examiner of Fetterman and his wife Gisele after the trio spent around an hour together. “He’s a commonsense person. He’s not liberal or conservative. He’s just a commonsense person, which is beautiful,” Trump added.

The title stated that Trump didn’t go into specifics, but reported that the pair discussed “the fate of U.S. Steel, support for Israel, shoring up the border, and the geopolitical benefits of acquiring Greenland.”

On Thursday, Fetterman joked that the meeting would be so that Trump would make him “Pope of Greenland.” That, of course, did not transpire, but the pair did discuss expansionist plans from Greenland to the Panama Canal. They reportedly agreed that from a national security and economic point of view, these topics were worth discussing.

Trump also reportedly lauded the spirit in which both sides of the political spectrum have come together since his November election.

“It’s been amazing, and there’s been cooperation within the Republicans and a lot of the Democrats,” he said, before again swaying into another compliment for Fetterman. “I will say that Sen. Fetterman was very impressive to me, really impressive.”

The public fawning marks a stark shift from previous comments about Fetterman, whom Trump said in 2022 “supports taxpayer-funded drug dens.”

As part of a MAGA rally in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, Trump raged: “Fetterman supports taxpayer-funded drug dens and the complete decriminalization of illegal drugs, including heroin, cocaine, crystal meth, and ultra lethal fentanyl. By the way, he [Fetterman] takes them himself.”

Sen. John Fetterman, D-Pa., walks through the Senate subway in the Capitol after a vote on Wednesday, May 15, 2024.
Fetterman has been critical of Trump in the past.

Fetterman also blasted Trump on CNN in a sweary rant, for casting doubt on the state’s election integrity. “It‘s the same s--- he played in ’20, and it didn’t go anywhere,” Fetterman said in a Nov. 2024 interview on State of the Union. “It’s the same, sad story that he had in ’20, and I would like to remind everybody that [Joe] Biden wrecked his s--- by 80,000 votes.”

And despite the relationship appearing to be on the mend, some former staffers aren’t happy about it. One called the Mar-a-Lago charm offensive a “pick-me” move: “I obviously hate it but it’s also kind of hilarious and epic,” they said.

Even still, with billionaires, celebrities and now Democrats flooding to Florida, it appears that Trump’s declaration that “EVERYBODY WANTS TO BE MY FRIEND” might be ringing true.
