Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has offered to send firefighters from his country to assist in efforts to suppress the California wildfires. On Sunday, Zelensky said in a post on X that the offer had been made through the “relevant channels,” meaning that Ukrainian firefighters could join firefighters from Mexico and Canada on the frontline across Greater Los Angeles. “Today, I instructed Ukraine’s minister of internal affairs and our diplomats to prepare for the possible participation of our rescuers in combating the wildfires in California. The situation there is extremely difficult, and Ukrainians can help Americans save lives,” Zelensky said in the post. “This is currently being coordinated, and we have offered our assistance to the American side through the relevant channels. 150 of our firefighters are already prepared.” The offer to help came just days after Donald Trump Jr., the U.S. president-elect’s eldest son, pointed the finger at Ukraine as a potential contributing factor to the blazes scorching Los Angeles. “Oh look of course the LA fire department donated a bunch of their supplies to Ukraine,” he wrote in a post on X on Jan. 8.
